Guy was pumped after a whale slammed off the north shore of Australia, and three other suffered broken ribs and facial fractures, the skipper said on Monday.
The 30-foot (9-metre) boat was coming into port in the Whitsundays off the Queensland country shore with eight passengers on board when a humpback whale rammed it from beneath, sending it airborne.
“Within a split second we all hit the floor, the boat started up into the atmosphere and it dislodged everyone off their feet,” captain Oliver Galea told AFP of the play on Saturday. “Not one of us knew what occurred.”
Even a man tended to by the crew of the boat while they alarmed emergency services and was knocked out. A helicopter escorted the boat.
The had been treated for a broken nose, even while Galea needed eight stitches for a nasty head wound. A third passenger suffered facial fractures along with the other ribs.
“We view whales all of the time, but it’s never (been) known for this type of thing to happen,” Galea said, adding that some of the passengers seen what they thought to be a humpback in the water after the crash.
Each year humpback whales migrate north from the Antarctic to the warmer climate Australia’s shore to mate and give birth. They could grow up to 16 meters (52 feet) long.
The ordeal has not discouraged some of those passengers, Galea explained, who were “all in great spirits” after they got together on Sunday to eat their previous day’s catch.
“The most important thing is we have home, and we have a few battle scars to show,” he further added.
